KSID FEIS FAQ
Everything you need to know about competing in Irish Dance with The Kelly School. KSID is registered with The Irish Dance Commission, An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha, CLRG, The Irish Dancing Teacher’s Association of North America, IDTNA, and The Irish Dance Teacher’s Association of New England, NEIDT.
Feis log
Feis logs must be updated with results following each feis and kept on file at KSID to make sure level advancements can be approved.
NOTE: Kelly School teachers may not be present at every feis. Keep your dancer’s feis log up to date and send results promptly to ksid@thekellyschoolofirishdance.com
Competitor Levels
Tir Na Nog
TIR NA NOG is an optional feis level for younger dancers participating in their first feis. Dancers perform right foot only of their beginner Reel step.

LEVEL ADVANCEMENT
Once a dancer competes in the Tir Na Nog level, they must move immediately into Beginner for their next feis.

LEVEL ADVANCEMENT
To move from Beginner to Advanced Beginner, a dancer must have completed one calendar year in Beginner and have teacher permission.

LEVEL ADVANCEMENT
To move from Advanced Beginner to Novice, a dancer must have completed one calendar year in Advanced Beginner and placed 1st (or 2nd/3rd with teacher permission) in that particular dance.

Traditional Set Dance
LEVEL ADVANCEMENT
To move from Novice to Prizewinner, a dancer must at least one 1st in that particular dance in Novice and have teacher permission. Prizewinner dancers must attend a minimum of 4 hours of classes per week, September-June. Feis Prep Class strongly encouraged.

NOTE: Dancers approaching full Prizewinner may begin to look for a solo dress with teacher permission. Solo dresses are allowed by KSID in Prizewinner and Champion levels, but are not required! Traditional Set Dance
LEVEL ADVANCEMENT
To move from Preliminary to Open Champion, a dancer must have a minimum of one win in each a light and heavy shoe dance. If a dancer wins two first place awards in one year, they will move to Open Championship in the following year. If the two wins happen in different calendar years, they will move to Open at the next Feis they enter after the second win. NOTE: Placing in a Regional or National Oireachtas does not change the status of a competitor.

Choice of Reel (48 bars) or Slip Jig (40 Bars)
Choice of Jig (48 Bars) or Hornpipe (40 Bars).
Modern Set piece of own choice.
KSID OPEN CHAMPION FEIS COSTUME
No major changes from Prelim costume rules.
Returning to Prelim
First place winners in the Open Championship category cannot return to a Preliminary (or Prizewinner) competition. A dancer who moves into Open Championship must stay a minimum of 2 years. If after 2 years they have not placed, they are allowed to return to Preliminary with teacher approval.
